Water does not hurt iron golems. However they cannot swim or walk while partially or totally submerged in water. They can be pushed by water current but in source water they are frozen. In water they will not attack or counter attack any mobs or players either. They do not breathe air and will also never drown underwater. A good way to get your golem out of water is to attach a lead to him. You could also use a fishing rod, but this will make him hostile to you for awhile.
