Entei cannot return after fainting in Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Silver, Pokémon Crystal, Pokémon FireRed or Pokémon LeafGreen however in the event of it being knocked out and fainting during the battle then it can return in Pokémon HeartGold, Pokémon SoulSilver, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire you will need to defeat the region's League Champion before the fainted Entei will re-spawn.

In any games starting from Generation IV, however, you can KO them as many times as you want, and they'll always come back…after you beat the Elite Four and Champion again, that is.

You can get Entei and Raikou to come back by defeating the Elite 4 and Lance in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver however this only works if you've defeated them previously. They'll keep on regenerating as long as you beat Lance however once you catch them then they won't regenerate anymore.

Once you have it the next day go to Pokemon square and a spinda should come and tell you about a mirage Pokemon, you will then gain access to Fiery Field. Fiery Field is a 30 floor dungeon that has Entei as the boss, if you clear the dungeon and buy the friend area Sacred Field you can go back to Fiery Field to try and recruit Entei.
