They're real. You're watching them, aren't you? They must be real. Or are the participants acting. Are they following a script? Playing a role? Yes they are. And before you get all up tight and go off, let me tell you that wrestlers are very tough, fit and extremely skilled athletes by any standard you'd care to measure them by. But think about it. If two cats built like they are went at it for REAL, even within a framework of modest rules, it wouldn't be long before one of them seriously injured or killed the other, would it? No, it wouldn't. They are tremendously strong, and are in killer shape. And that's the clue. They are built to do some damage. Make no mistake about it, they all suffer injuries I'd not want to have to recover from. They take some punishment. But the bottom line remains the same. Each one is more or less as strong, as tough, as quick and as skilled and dangerous as any other, and any one of them could pretty much serve up a big can or whup a$$ on any other one. Could cripple or kill another one on any given day. Of course the matches are scripted in a general way. If it wasn't, it'd be more like Ultimate Fighting is now. Wrestlers would be disabled or killed on a regular basis. We still have a venue where there is absolutely no scripting, by the way. The one where we really do cripple or kill our opponents. Problem is, we risk having that happen to us. It's called war. And IT is real. Wrestling is entertainment.

"NO they are actors and if they really did punch them they would not hurt cause the person would have punched them softly." - Stupidest Answer.

Yes, they are real. If the punches weren't real WWE management would be able to pick up anyone with decent looks for the roles they want them to fill. Instead, WWE superstars are constantly training and Torrie Wilson, according to her wikipedia trains up to four times per week and it goes on to describe her routine.

All superstars are trained to take punches. Ted DiBiase's tooth flew out in a match. This occurs often and they go on to continue the match. May 9th, 2010, Evan Bourne's tooth flew out and he continued the match. They are trained to take these kind of pains and the punches are infact, real.

Is amateur wrestling fake like WWE?

WWE is considered sports "entertainment". The company includes scripted storylines, segments and pre-determined matches. The wrestling is for the most part fake, but they make it look real as much as possible. However that doesn't mean the wrestlers don't get hurt, injured or bloodied by mistake. Amateur Wrestling is 100% real, and much different than the pro-wrestling business like WWE. No highflying moves, or kicks or punches. Amateur Wrestling is more of a mat-style wrestling that is really competitive, going for submissions and locks on your opponent.
