The Kindertransport was used because

  • Most countries refused to let in the new immigrants.
  • However, after November 9, 1938, more commonly known as the Night of The Broken Glass almost all thirty one counties refused to let in Jewish immigrants. Terrified that Hitler and his Nazi army would strike there next. After that, most Jewish families struggled to find a country that would let them in.
  • Other participating countries thought that keeping the younger generations of the Holocaust alive would be sacred to the future of Europe.

    • A unspecified number of kids under the age of 17 were allowed to enter the United Kingdoms on temporarily travels.
    • When the children arrived in England some already had pre-arranged homes with relatives, however the majority were put into foster homes and orphanages and sent to work on farms.
    • Most children bonded with their foster parents well, and were accepted into the community. However, there were also children that got abused and bullied about their past.
    • All children had a guaranteed amount of €50 (that was around 250 five dollars in the U.S. at that time) to finance them, because it was expected that they would reunite with their parents later.
