The prophecy that Sybill Trelawney made stated this:

"One must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives"

This prophecy refers earlier to Voldemort and Harry OR Neville - however Voldemort didn't realise at the time that it could have been either child and only thought it was referring to Harry. Thus the war began.

So the section of the prophecy above is basically saying that only one of them can live in the end and whoever dies must be killed by the other. ie Harry must kill Voldemort or Voldemort must kill Harry. So therefore, since Voldemort isn't planning on dying, he must kill Harry himself as the prophecy states it.

Why does Voldemort kill himself?

He doesn't. Actually he does but it is an accident.. When Voldemort had the elder wand he did not know that even though he had possession of it he did not hold the power to it.... let me explain When Snape agreed with dumbledore to kill dumbledore it was a agreement planned so the power of the elder wand would have stayed with dumbledore but when Draco disarmed Albus up on the astronomy tower he took possession of the elder wand then when harry took dracos wand in malfoy manor he took possession of the power of the elder wand.... so what happened was the elder wand would not kill harry cause harry was it's true master so it rebounded and hit voldemort... there fore that was how voldemoret died

Why did Lord Voldemort want to kill Harry's family?

Voldemort did not enter the Potter's home specifically to kill Lily and James. He was there to kill Harry due to the piece of the prophecy Snape had conveyed to him. However, Voldemort really did not care who he left dead in his wake. James tried to give Lily and Harry a chance of escape, so he was killed without a second thought. Lily stood between Voldemort and the infant Harry. Since Snape requested mercy on Lily's behalf, Voldemort gave her the choice of moving out of his way. When she refused him, he killed her anyway.

How did Harry Potter get out of the house alive after Voldemort klled his m other and father?

Harry's mother wouldn't let voldemort kill harry and protected harry as much as she could until voldemort killed her. When voldemort finally tried to kill harry potter he was already protected through the power of love so the most damage voldemort could do was giving harry the thunderbolt shaped scar along with part of himself. When voldemort accidentally gave harry part of himself it drained his power leaving voldemort to vanish until he could regain his strength.

Harry thinks he has to allow himself to be killed, so he allows Voldemort to hit him with the killing curse. This doesn't kill Harry however and just destroys the part of the Hoorcrux that lived inside Harry. Harry was then given the choice to die or go back. He choose to go back.
