'Scabbers' was a rat owned by Ron Weasley in the first three Harry Potter books (1991-94). In 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', Ron reveals Scabbers used to belong to Percy, but was given to Ron when Percy got an owl as a present. In 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban', it is revealed that 'Scabbers' is actually an Animagus (wizard who can turn into an animal) by the name of Peter Pettigrew. Pettigrew was the friend of James Potter (Harry's father), Remus Lupin and Sirius Black. He betrayed James and Lily Potter's location to Voldemort, resulting in their deaths, and framed Sirius Black for the betrayal. Pettigrew faked his own death (for which Sirius Black was blamed) and lived with the Weasley family in the form of Scabbers the rat until Sirius Black escaped Azkaban Prison and recognised him. The actor who plays Peter Pettigrew (in human form) in the Harry Potter film franchise is Timothy Spall.
Death originally owned it before giving it to Ignotus Peverell. It was passed throughout the generations and was given to James Potter. Albus Dumbledore, who had borrowed it from James Potter, then returned it to Harry Potter.
