Why is it important to Peeta Mellark that he dides himself in the hunger games?

The Capitol has thrown him and Katniss into an arena where he will have to murder people in the same situation he's in, so he is freaking out cuz its either get killed by the people who are evil enough to want to be there or kill people and live with the knowledge that they will never see home again because of him. So, in a way, he is defying the Capitol by refusing to be changed into an evil person through their Games.
