I have heard two stories. There is the one that states he wears it because one time he tore a hole in the knee of his pants and took his mothers scarf and tied it around his leg to cover it up, and that he thought the idea was cool and unique and stated to do it all the time.

Then there is what I believe to be the truth, considering he told me it straight to my face two days ago, stating that when he was in high school he had a girlfriend who died in a drunk driving car crash, and that he started wearing it out of respect for her, because it was a very traumatic event. He was starting to get emotional so I believe it's the truth. He said after the mourning process it just kind of became his trademark.

William Beckett is a fan of many "classic" and/or older styles. In the mid and late ninteenth century, there was something known as the "bandana code." It is a way of indicating that a person is gay. If they wear it on the left, as Billiam does, it means the person is the "top" in the relationship. Different patterns also tell what kind of sex the person likes.

It is also important to note that his love interest, Gabe Saporta, also has a habbit of wearing one around his right leg when touring and when with William Beckett.
