I think he needed to feel free of the responsibilities that marriage and family entails in order to devote himself to constant learning and improvement of his mind. He required this freedom to fulfill his need to love all humanity and assist those who reached out to him to learn and grow. He possibly sacrificed that aspect of life and living for the betterment of mankind. I doubt from what I have read that he would have felt he could fulfill both roles fairly.
