The network A&E wanted him written off, even after the writers voiced their opinion and was against the idea. He wanted to remain on the show, it was not his decision to leave, it was A&E. Bad move on A&'s part.

Why did A and E fire Laz Alonzo from The Breakout Kings?
There are theories going around, but no one knows for sure. Some believe A & E did not want a black man in a leading role. That seems hard to believe in this day and age, especially when his character was popular. It is much more likely that they felt killing off his character would benefit the show in the long run.
