Itachi was very ill before Sauske killed him. The reason why he wanted his brother to kill him was because Itachi wanted Sasuke to be the hero of the hidden leaf village. He wanted Sauake to be the one to avenge his clan. There were a few other reasons as well. Itachi wanted to battle Sasuke to rid his little brother of the cursed mark Orochimaru gave him and he also wanted to give Sasuke some of his powers before he died to protect him from Madara. During Itachi and Sasuke's fight he showed his little brother a way to obtain more power, by taking the eyes of a Uchiha to have light so he wouldn't be blinded after using his eyes too much during battle.

All your friend has to do is die, or a carrier of Mongekyo can give it to someone. That is how Sasuke got his new power, from Itachi giving it to him.

Why did Itachi die?
Itachi died because of an over usage of his Mangekyo Sharingan. And of an illness. Itachi chose to die instead of killing Sasuke.
