The initial Beatles lineup consisted of John Lennon (rhythm guitar), Paul McCartney (second lead guitar), George Harrison (lead guitar), Stuart Sutcliffe (bass guitar) and Tommy Moore (drums); this was the band that first left Liverpool to tour Scotland with singer Johnny Gentle late that spring. (McCartney, Harrison and Sutcliffe all briefly adopted stage names: Paul Ramon, Carl Harrison and Stu De Stael.) Moore quit after they returned, but left his drums behind; the band brought them to shows, inviting members of the audience to give them a try. (This usually backfired badly.) Pete Best joined them just in time to go to Hamburg, Germany in August!!!
