Why did Katniss chose Peeta Mellark?

There were two reasons. First, Gale changed so much during the course of the series that he wasn't anything like the person that Katniss had loved back in District 12. Second, although Katniss loved both Peeta and Gale, and they both loved her in their own way, the reason she chose Peeta is because she knew that she wanted someone who needed her as much as she needed him. Gale didn't need her or anyone else. Peeta needed her, and she responded to that.
