John Amos left "Good Times", or was ASKED to leave, because he did not agree with the way the "J.J" character was portrayed as the sass talking teen who disrespected his father continually and the fact that it was supposed to be taken as "funny." He felt that a father should not have been portrayed taking guff from his child and never correcting him.

And my guess is that John also did not agree with the way writers & producers of the show portrayed black people in general: So ridiculously poor that they could barely afford to pay $80 for their rent, let alone save it. And let's not forget that inspite being a hard worker, "James" couldn't hold a job with crazy glue due to his "lack of education." Because John was vocal about his dislike of the shows direction, producers decided to kill his character off.
