In the newer films he was a hero and knight of the republic, he served the republic and fought many sith and other threats to the republic and became a general. he was also responsible for guiding the chosen one. during these films he believes the chosen one is Anikin and trains him in the ways of the force after Qui-gon Gin, his master, is defeated by Darth Maul. In the third film, when Anikin turns to the dark side of the force, he believes that Anikin is not the chosen one and tries to hide and protect Anikins children, Luke and Leia, realising that one of them may be the chosen one.

In the old films (4,5,6) his role was to guide luke, protect him from imperials, train in the ways of the force and keep luke from the dark side, he was basically a mentor to luke. he ws tasked with aiding the prophecy of the chosen one by, originally helping anikin (the chosen one), and then helping luke, who he know thinks is the chosen one as anikin turned to the dark side. luke helps aid the prophecy, with the help of ben, by not killing his father (anikin) who is reminded of the light side by him and sacrifices himself to kill the emperor and by killing the emperor anikin (D. Vader) fufills the prophecy.

Outside of the films he remains as a ghost of the force, along with others like Yoda and anikin, guiding luke and many other jedi and their descendants.

In Episode 1, it was Qui-Gon Jinn. But when Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn battled Darth Maul in Episode 1, Darth Maul killed Qui-Gon, and Obi-Wan managed to defeat Maul. Kenobi was promoted the rank of Jedi Knight soon after.

Well, sort of. Obi-Wan was killed by Vader in "A New Hope," but his ghost appeared in "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi." He was still able to give Luke Skywalker some help and advice.
