Regulus Black gave the locket to Kreacher to destroy but Kreacher was unable to do so. Mundungus Fletcher stole the locket from Grimauld Place and sold it to Dolores Umbridge. Harry, Ron, and Hermione infiltrated the ministry and stole it back from her.
