It means people - with their mean ways - can go to hell "When you were young and you heart was an open book ( you were naive to the ways of the world ) you used to say live and let live , ( to each his own , basically ) but if this ever changing world in which we live in makes you give in and cry - say live and let die "! ( In a nutshell all jerks can go to hell , your no longer indifferent to their behavior ) that's my opinion of this song , according to Axel Rose it seems to be correct , GREAT SONG by the way !

Since Paul McCartney was asked to write this as the theme song for the James Bond movie by the same name, perhaps one should consider the genre of spy movies for the answer. In the world of "spy vs. spy", one guy wants to live and see his enemy die in the process. It's also a play on words of the adage, "Live and Let Live".MP
