Many recent performances of the lyrics and more or less bawdy parodies of the original poem exist. Both these and the original are usually set to the music of "The man on the flying trapeze". The original was almost certainly written by the Irishman Percy French, an engineering student at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1877, then aged 23. It portrays an imaginary event in ca 1850 concerning the Crimean War. Percy later became a music hall entertainer. Hope this is what you want.http://wiki.answers.com/Q/User:222.153.69.228 02:34, 13 Jun 2009 (UTC)
