I mean to say half the population will have most probably sung it by now won't they?
The first actual recording of the witch doctor was by the guy that created Alvin and the Chipmunks, David Seville. I watched a whole biography on it a few months ago and according to them he was a jingle writer and came up with the song and the cute concept of the chipmunks.-Cliffclavin

Are you sure you're referring to the same song?All the available sources say that "Witch Doctor" was written by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. in 1958 and released on Liberty Records (Liberty 55079) under the pseudonym "David Seville", beforehe invented the Chipmunks characters. Bagdasarian recorded a "Chipmunks" version of the same song two years later.
