However, the 3rd was Asuma Sarutobi's father and Konohamaru Sarutobi's grandfather. (Asuma is Konohamaru's uncle) And for the answer above, the 3rd never retired, he died in combat at the hands of Orochimaru during the Sound Invasion. Also, Minato was a student of Jiraiya, who was a student to the 3rd.
