Zerlina is a young girl engaged to marry Masetto, a peasant. The lecherous Don Giovanni attempts to seduce her, by luring her away from her wedding party and promising Masetto he will host the wedding ceremony at his castle. He and Zerlina are alone and he almost succeeds with her but is interrupted by Donna Elvira, a lady he was courting but abandoned.
Zerlina is typically sung by a soubrette soprano, but has been performed by lyric mezzos and lyric sopranos alike.
