The movies do not tell why the Dwarves are hated in The Hobbit and The Hobbit DoS. However, it is believed that past wars and experiences are the reason the Dwarves are hated.

The named swords (Orcrist, Glamdring and Sting) are found by Thorin and Company in a troll cave. Originally, however, they were from the hidden elven kingdom of Gondolin in Beleriand (which by the time of the hobbit was sunken below the waves).
After using the small sword to vanguish the spiders in Mirkwood, Bilbo decides that it deserves a name and calls it Sting.
A large knife of elven make that glows blue when there are Orcs near, made at about the same time as Glamdring and Orcrist and in the same place, Gondolin. Bilbo uses it as a sword and gives it the name 'Sting' because he uses it as his sting vs. the spiders. It was found in the cave of the trolls along with Beater (Glamdring) and Biter (Orcrist).
After Bilbo kills the giant Spiders he names his sword Sting. He did not imagine himself capable of being heroic, and until that moment had felt like a very small Hobbit in a very big, dangerous world. He was much more confident from that point on in the adventure.
