Sai is a replacement of Sasuke when he left Konoha, Sai isn't his name, its just a name given to him for the purpose of being a part of a team, his real name is unknown. He joined the ANBU roots at a young age,which makes him an anbu.

Sai, a code name and not his real name, is the replacement for sasuke, once he defects to Orochimaru's sound village. Sai was part of Root, a ANBU black ops child training center that stripped kids of their emotions and made them killing machines, who never hesitated to complete their mission.

Root was run by Danzo, who was a power hungry village leader at odds with the 3rd hokage, and as such, root was disbanded because the 3rd did not think that root was stable any more, as Danzo was deemed unstable.

Nevertheless, Danzo gave Sai, which is nothing but a code name, the mission to meet Orochimaru and work together to destroy the village hidden in the leaves and remake it as they saw fit. This mission was a ruse so that Sai can assassinate Sasuke, since he defected from the village. Assassinating rogue ninja is a common practice among the ninja villages, as all ninjas are trained since conception in the village's arts, and defective ninjas are prone to reveal there secrets

Sai, given his lack of social skills, has problems connecting with the villagers, especially choji, who he calls fat, as he likes pet names and chooses ones that describe how they look, which he soon changes that to call people the opposite of how they look, which is how he comes to call ino beautiful.

His jutsu is drawing, and though he has drawn millions of pictures, they are still bland, without emotion and without names, but he can make any or all of his pictures come to life off of the page to enlarge to actual animal size and even to move, such as birds for look outs and lions for attacking. He can also communicate by making words transform into animals and then revert back to words when they have reached the intended recipient.
