Playing keyboards, guitar and harmonica, Brooks is a man of many talents. He started playing professionally at age 16 in 1963. His first band, the Caravelles, featured future Alice Cooper guitarist Mike Lipman and became popular for University of Arizona events and city-wide concerts. From 1965 to 1968, he played with the rhythm and blues band Garfield Smelter. This band played its way around the country, became one of the most popular and highly paid nightclub bands in Tucson, and opened concerts for many of the era’s biggest recording artists, including the Doors, the Animals, Buffalo Springfield and the Yardbirds with Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck.

He played 25 years with the Statesboro Blues Band, which played throughout California and the Southwest, and backed up blues greats Otis Rush, Albert Collins, Bo Diddley and Charlie Musselwhite.
