James Harvey Robinson (1863-1936) was an American historian. Robinson taught history at the University of Pennsylvania. After becoming a full professor in 1895, he taught at Columbia University until 1919. He had an important influence on the study and teaching of history. In 1919, he was one of the founders and first director of the New School for Social Research. His writings and lectures stressed the "new history" - the social, scientific, and intellectual progress of humanity rather than just politics.
