Bobby Taylor (the Vancouvers) saw "The Jacksons" perform. He arranged for them to audition for Motown. The audition was recorded and sent to Berry Gordy, who was in LA at the time. Impressed, especially with young Michael, he signed them to a contract. The story was created that Diana Ross discovered them and all the boys' ages were reduced by two years in promotional materials.

Michael showed talent early on by performing in front of classmates during a Christmas recital in kindergarten. His father Joseph Jackson who was part of the R&B band called "The Falcons" who never made it big - wanted to make successes of his children and was the driving force behind his son's success in the beginning...

In 1964, Michael and Marlon joined the Jackson Brothers - a band formed by brothers Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine-as backup musicians playing congas and tamborine. Michael later began performing backup vocals and dancing. When he was eight, Michael began sharing the lead vocals with his older brother Jermaine. His dancing and stage presence caused him to become the focus of the group. His older brother, Jackie, told Gerri Hershey in Rolling Stone, "It was sort of frightening. He was so young. I don't know where he got it. He just knew. " and the group's name was changed to The Jackson 5. Joe Jackson had the band tour the Midwest extensively from 1966 to 1968, frequently performing at a string of black clubs known as the "chitlin circuit", where they often opened stripteases and other adult acts. In 1966, they won a major local talent show with renditions of Motown hits led by Michael. The Jackson 5 recorded several songs, including "Big Boy", for the local record label Steeltown in 1967. The Jacksons' fame and popularity soon began to spread. While performing at the Apollo Theater in New York City's Harlem neighborhood in 1968, Motown recording artist Gladys Knight and pianist Bobby Taylor discovered them. Later that year singer Diana Ross became associated with the boys during a "Soul Weekend" in Gary. With Ross's support, the Jacksons signed a contract with Motown Records. Berry Gordy the famous head of Motown, took control of the Jacksons' careers.

British journalist Martin Bashir hosted the documentary "Living with Michael Jackson" in February 2003. It was based on a series of interviews with Jackson that Bashir did over a duration of eight months, during mid-2002 and into early 2003. The documentary was shown first in England on the ITV network, and was then shown in the US by ABC-TV. The documentary was very controversial, because Jackson felt that Bashir had betrayed his trust by editing the interviews in such a way as to give the impression that Jackson had behaved inappropriately with children. Bashir denied this, and said it was not his intent to manipulate anything Jackson had said or cast him in a bad light.
