In 1964, Michael and Marlon joined the Jackson Brothers - a band formed by brothers Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine-as backup musicians playing congas and tamborine. Joe Jackson had the band tour the Midwest extensively from 1966 to 1968, frequently performing at a string of black clubs known as the "chitlin circuit", where they often opened stripteases and other adult acts. In 1966, they won a major local talent show with renditions of Motown hits led by Michael. The Jackson 5 recorded several songs, including "Big Boy", for the local record label Steeltown in 1967. The Jacksons' fame and popularity soon began to spread. While performing at the Apollo Theater in New York City's Harlem neighborhood in 1968, Motown recording artist Gladys Knight and pianist Bobby Taylor discovered them. Later that year singer Diana Ross became associated with the boys during a "Soul Weekend" in Gary. With Ross's support, the Jacksons signed a contract with Motown Records. Berry Gordy the famous head of Motown, took control of the Jacksons' careers.

It was based on a series of interviews with Jackson that Bashir did over a duration of eight months, during mid-2002 and into early 2003. The documentary was shown first in England on the ITV network, and was then shown in the US by ABC-TV. The documentary was very controversial, because Jackson felt that Bashir had betrayed his trust by editing the interviews in such a way as to give the impression that Jackson had behaved inappropriately with children.
