Maria Filipovna ( this is her first and middle name), whose nickname
is Masha, is a fictional character who was added as a love interest for Valentin (Valya) Fedorovich a.k.a Fyodorovich Bulgakov.
Valentin is not fictional; he did exist. One of his books is "The Last Year of Leo Tolstoy". the short section on him during the credits is accurate; he ( and several others) emigrated to Prague in 1923. There, during the 1930's, he wrote his "Biographical Dictionary" and lectured on Tolstoy and vegatarianism, among other things. The writer also headed the Prague Russian Museum. He believed strongly in celibacy. In 1948, he returned to Russia. There appears to be no evidence that he had any physical relationships in his life.
