The couple went to Bora Bora for their honeymoon. Carpenter called her family from the island and described it as "Boring Boring." The marriage became a disaster, and they filed for divorce in November of 1981. The divorce was to be finalized on the day Carpenter passed away, so she died a married woman. After going out with Carpenter's parents to celebrate her father's birthday. She and Burris returned to the Carpenters' Downey home and after a brief argument, Burris told her parents, "You can keep her!" Carpenter never saw her husband again after that night.
