Elton John was defenitley a great best selling solo artist of the 70's, then you had artists such as stevie wonder, and elvis. Paul McCartney was also in the top 5 best selling artist of the 70's, but thats if you include Wings wich was his band in the 70's. He did write the songs, sung and formed the band (Paul McCartney & Wings)

The Irvin Twins were regulars in Lexington KY in the mid 70s at the club Flarraty's. They later moved in the late 70s and early 80s to a small bar at the steak house Del Frisco's. It appears they would be over 66 years old now.

Famed session guitarist Louie Shelton played the solos on the 2nd version of this song. Shelton has released a few solo albums and in the '70s, he worked extensively with Seals & Crofts as producer and guitar player.
I wonder if you are thinking of Major Harris. He was with the r&b group the Delfonics, before going solo in the early 70s. His biggest hit was "Love Won't Let Me Wait," a top-5 song in 1975. Major Harris died in November 2012 of heart failure.
