One famous spelunker was Floyd Collins who was exploring a narrow passageway into Mammoth Cave in Kentucky when his foot was wedged between a rock and he became stuck. Soon after, his yells for help were heard by his brother, who crawled into the passage as well and found him stuck. After four days of being sent food and water, while trying to be rescued, the hall experienced a cave in and Collins could only be communicated with vocally. 14 days later Collins died from exposure, thirst, and starvations, only three days before a new shaft was dug to reach him. Collins body would not be retrieved for another two months.
