In the book, Alison killed her identical twin sister, Courtney DiLaurentis, causing Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily to think that Ali is dead, when, in reality, it is Courtney.

In the show, its the same idea, different killer. Ali is still alive while Courtney is dead. Except Ali didn't kill her. In the second last episode in season 2, Garrett gets arrested for killing "Ali".

Ali had a twin who was mental to when Courtney (Ali's twin) was going to the mental hospital they sent the real ali so when Courtney played ali the whole time real ali was in a mental hospital so when ali came back she killed Courtney in revenge for dumping her best friend and becoming friends with Hanna, Spencer, Aria, and Emily but the whole time that made her popular and them her posy when she was found in Mia's back yard the DNA test had a glich of some sort a the concluded this was alis body unfortunately they were wrong they had Courtney's body
