Naruto was about to break the seal and release the ninth tail but was controlled by his father Minato Namekase Yondaime Hokage. It happens when Pains used the Chibaku Tensei to create a giant miniature moon in an attempt to capture the Nine-Tails. Minato repaired the seal and sent Naruto back to finish his battle with Pain.
With the Nine-Tails' chakra suppressed, Naruto and Pain resumed their battle, with Naruto tricking Pain into using a Shinra Tensei on dozens of shadow clones, giving Naruto enough time to strike him with a Rasengan during the five second window. The last body of Pain was defeated, and Naruto used its chakra receivers to track down and confront Nagato himself.

∙ 13y agoFirst of all, the nine tails is a demon, not a guy, and it's actually sealed inside Naruto. I'm not sure if it's in the anime yet, but you can find his battle with Kyuubi for control of his chakra in the manga.
