He asked the Volturi to kill him however they said 'no'. So he decided to do something that would make the Volturi kill him. Go in the sun. (So he would sparkly :D) Bella saved him though. He decided he was going to do it in the clock tower in the middle of the afternoon for the best effects.
Edward doesn't kill himself in New Moon. He begs the Voulturi to do it and when they refuse he threatens them to expose himself in the sun, but just before he does it Bella stops him.
