Two brothers came over from Woerth, Alsace in 1751,

Johann Valentin Mutschler [Born: 27 Jun 1731 Wörth, Alsace, Germany/France Died:Warren Co., New Jersey]

My line is from Friedrich. The brothers came over on the ship Duke of Bedford and landed in Phillidelphia. There they took the oath to the English King. I don't know where they were from 1751 until the 1770's but by then they both had purchased land in Sussex County New Jersey on the Delaware River. (Sussex County was partitioned in 1824 and the homesteads are now in Warren County New Jersey, north of Phillipsburg, New Jersey. Both brothers and their families show up in the records of the Germany Reformed Church and the Lutheran Church in Philllipsburg. The Lutheran Church still exists and is St. James Lutheran Church, known historically in the area as the Straw Church. Friedrich was very hard to find but a researcher, Maxine Dart, who is from Friedrich's line found him and his children in a will that was probated after his death. This enabled her and later me to compile some of the family line. I didn't spend a lot of time on Friedrich's line since my ancestors are in Valentin's line but I did do some work on it and added to, verified and corrected some of Mrs. Dart's work.

I have also researched the family back to Woerth, Alsace, Germany/France. I put both countries there because both have nominally had political control of the region. In the middle of the 1600's at the end of the 30 years war Alsace became a protectorate of France and in 1696 France took total political control. In 1870 Germany took Alsace back and held it until the end of WWI. Germany again took it at the beginning of WWII until returned to France in 1944/5 However the customs and architecture still maintained a German cultural look and both German and French were spoken. The church records were written in German until late in the 1700's when after the French Revolution a civil system of recording births, deaths, marriages etc came into effect.

The oldest house in Woerth is the Mutchler House built in 1594. ( Note: The house was built in 1594 but I don't know who built it or if it became the Mutchler house at some later date, it was in the family until the mid 1990's.) The first ancestor that I can verify is a Mathis Mutchler who was born around 1593. I used the copies of the original church records from Woerth to compile the family. The pastor of the church just prior to Valentin and Friedrich's emigration to America had people who were sponsors at Baptisms or other church rites sign the church record of the event. Valentin, Friedrich and I think their father, Andreas Mutchler, all signed the church records which indicates some level of literacy. Valentin and Friedrich also signed their oaths to England when they landed in Phillidelphia.

To get back on track, members of Friedrich's family moved to New York state, Pa. and of course the Midwest where the Valentine you found died in Indiana.

I will put some of the information I have on your direct line at the end of this email. I do not mind sharing my information and of course if there is information that will add to, correct, or complete my research I appreciate the receipt of it. I do ask that the research be credited. Research that I have, that I didn't directly do, is credited to the person who supplied it whether Maxine Dart, Gayle Fisher or others. I have shared my research and found it published by others without credit to the persons who did the research whether it was me or others. I find this makes hard to go back to sources to verify information, additionally it is annoying and dishonest.

I use several different spellings of Mutchler. I was not sure which to use because in the church records from Germany, which are written in old German script, the name appears to almost always be spelled as Mutchler. The records in Philladelphia for the Duke of Bedford use Mutschler as do other records later on but Mutchler, Mucher, Muschler and other variations are also present in different branches of the family with Mutchler and Mutschler being the most common. I probably should have used the spelling of Mutchler in the German family but I did try and use the predominate spelling contained in records for the family units in America.

Below is the some of the information on your line. Note the desigantions, GC6 and GD14 are my way of identifying birth place, generation and the person in the Generation. The G is Germany, the C, D etc is the generation and the number is a randon number assigned to that person in the generation. The numbering system changes with the first generation born in America to FA 1 etc. The F designates Friedrich's line, the A the generation and the number the designation within a generation.

The information comes from records of the Wörth Lutheran Church, in Wörth, Alsace, formerly Germany, but is now in the area of France known as Alsace-Lorraine. Andreas was listed as a linen weaver. It notes that Andreas was a widower and that Anna's father was a citizen and tailor of Langensultzbach. Jonas Mutschler [GD13] emigrated to Philidelphia, Pennsylvania in 1750, settling in Morris County New Jersey, Johann Friedrich Mutschler [GD15] and Johann Valentin Mutschler [GD17] emigrated to Philidelphia, Pennsylvania in 1751, both settled in Greenwich Township, Warren County New Jersey.

Johann Friedrich Mutschler [GD15] emigrated to America with brother Johann Valentin Mutschler [GD17] and landed at Philadelphia 14 Sep 1751 on the ship Duke of Bedford, Richard Jefferys, Master. He eventually located in Warren County, New Jersey. Saint James Lutheran Church, known locally as the Straw Church, records of baptisms for their grandchildren indicate that he was married to Elizabeth and had several children baptized, this information came from matching Johannus birth date, as supplied research conducted by Lottie Mutchler in the 1950s. with the Johannus baptized 18 Aug 1773. Mrs. Maxine Dart, who has done extensive research on Friedrich has also supplied information on Friedrich's children and she believes that Hendershied was Friedrich's wife's maiden name. There are several Hendershied's in the records of St. James Lutheran Church during Friedrich's time there. Friedrich bought 135 acres from Lawrence Sliker, deed dated 8 Jun 1775. Sixty-seven acres of this land was sold by his children to John Metz, deed dated 27 Jul 1801. These two deeds are in the Sussex County, New Jersey County Clerk's Office. The remaining estate was sold by Friedrich's estate to his son Fredrick Mutschler [FA2] in a deed dated 28 May 1804. There is a deed in Warren County recording the sale of this land, this occurred after Warren County, was split from Sussex County, in 1824. The area in which the land was owned is no longer Greenwich Township but is now Harmony Township. According to First Reformed Church Records Friedrich died 31 Aug 1794. The birth and death dates for the children come mostly from confirmation and birth records of St. James Lutheran Church, from deed books in Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey and deed records in Belvidere, Warren County, New Jersey. Gertraud Mutschler [FA10] was baptized 18 Jun 1779, her sponsors were Christian Smitsh and wife. Maxine Dart's research lists a probable date of death. No record of a marriage for Gertraud has been found.

Saint James Lutheran Church records record that Johannus Mutschler [FA8] was baptized in Saint James Lutheran Church, on 14 Nov 1773, his sponsors were Fredrick Schwartz and Maria Smithin. The record of the marriage to Susanna Doffert is in the First Reformed Church Records. The records of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church and Saint John's Lutheran Church, Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, contain a birth record of Susanna Catharine Toffert on 20 Oct 1773 to Adam and Susanna Toffert. Toffert is a probably a variation of Doffert. Saint James Lutheran Church, Greenwich Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania, records show the birth of the two children to Johannus Mutshler [FA8] and Susanna Doffert, Jacob Mutschler [FB23] and Catharina Mutschler [FD26], as listed above. Jacob was baptized 16 Jul 1797, his sponsors were Jacob Schneider and wife Maria. Catharina's baptism took place 21 Apr 1799., her sponsors are listed as her parents. The rest of Johannus's children come from a deed found by Mrs. Dart. She also lists children Jonas, Anna, and Barbara but I can not find any birth records for these three listed as heirs in the deeds Mrs. Dart has found. The deed is in the land records, Book L, pages 431-432, in Sudbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania It shows the purchase of 84 acres by Frederick Mutschler [FA2] and John Mutschler (Johannus Mutschler [FA8]) dated 08 Jun 1801 from Thomas Thomas and wife Mary and then the transfer of Valentine Mutschler's [FB22] eleven acre share to his brothers and sisters, listing them as the children of John Mutschler (Johannus Mutschler [FA8]) who died intestate. Recorded in Vol. E page 381, Land Records for Warren County, is the sale of 67.5 acres of land in Greenwich Township. This property is the remainder of the original 135 acres bought by Friedrich Mutschler [GD15]. This deed records the sale of the land to John Metz for 325 pounds and is signed by Friedrich's heirs or attorneys representing John Mutschler [FB24], Elizabeth Mutschler [FB25] and husband Jerimiah, Jacob Mutschler [FB23], Catharina Mutschler [FB26] and husband Elisha Tharp, Mary Mutschler [FB27] and husband Jacob Butt, and Frederick Mutschler [FB28]. For some reason Valentine Mutschler [FB22] is not mentioned. Mrs. Dart notes that many of the records in Northumberland County refer to Johannus Mutschler [FA8] as Captain John Mutschler. I have found no record of Sussanna's death or of a second marriage for Johannus.

Information from Maxine Dart. There is conjecture as to Valentine's birth place, tradition says New Jersey as does the 1850 Census, but other family tradition indicates Pennsylvania, possibly Northumberland County

Tradition also indicates that Valentine moved from his home in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania to Pickaway County, Ohio and lived on Indian Lands near Circleville, Ohio. There is a record that Valentine purchased a 84 acre farm in Dallas Township, Crawford County, Ohio in 1829. Valentine lived in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. The 1830 Census shows Valentine in Grand Prairie Township, Marion County, Ohio, 1840 to 1850 he is in Antrim Township, Crawford County, Ohio and brother Jacob Mutschler [FB23] is in Pit Township, Crawford County After 1850 Valentine moved to Lake County, Indiana were he purchased a farm of about 400 acres (legal description, Section 2-24-8 File #M30113.) Title Records at Lake County Title Company show a purchase of 40 acres in June 1856 from a Henry Wells (Deed Record Book M page 250). The farm in Lake County was divided among his children and widow. Valentine's son Jacob Mutschler [FC72] moved with Valentine and Elizabeth (Jacob's step mother) to Indiana and helped his father get his property in order. When Valentine died Jacob didn't receive what he considered a fair share of the property and left. Elizabeth remained on the farm with the minor children until 1870 when it was sold to Havia Dye of Crown Point. His first wife Catherine Coon is buried in Grand Prairie Township, Marion County, Ohio. Her children James and Elizabeth, who both died in infancy are buried in Serry Cemetery, behind Olive Branch Church, as is she. Catherine's birth date and death date are on her tombstone, the birth place of New York is family tradition. The date of the marriage to Elizabeth is actually the date the license was issued in Crawford County, Ohio, there is no record or the actual marriage. Valentine died on his farm and is buried in Deer Creek Cemetery, east of Crown Point, Indiana and just south of Rt. 30. The stones are all broken and many have been removed because of vandalism. The DAR made records of all local cemeteries during the 1930's and it is those records that show his burial. Two sons from Valentine and Elizabeth's marriage died in the civil war, William [FC76] and Peter [FC79]. William died of Heart disease and was listed as a Civil War Casualty. He was a Private, Company B, 20th Infantry Regiment, Infantry, Indiana Volunteers, he enlisted at Lafayette, Indiana, 25 Jun 1861. He is listed as 20 years of age, 5'10.5'' tall, dark complexion, eyes light, hair black. This information comes from War Records, Washington D. C. Peter died as a result of wounds. He was wounded 25 Jun 1862 at Richmond, Virginia, he was a Private Company B, 20th Infantry Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. He enlisted at Lafayette, Indiana. He is described as 18 years of age, 5' 8.5'' tall, light eyes, hair light, complexion medium. Information comes from War Department records, Washington D. C. Marriage records for Solomon [FC74], Margaret [FC75], Scott [FC82] and Mathilda [FC83] Mutchler have not been found.
