It wasn't a video exactly - it was a live TV appearance on the "Motown 25" show in 1983, commemorating Motown Records' 25th anniversary.
It was a highly anticipated appearance because while he was regarded by many as the brightest young talent since Motown's glory days in the 60s, and had had a lot of success as the young lead singer of the Jackson Five a decade earlier, as a solo artist he still hadn't hit the very top - yet. He'd made a spash a few years earlier with the excellent "Off the Wall" album, and everyone was eager to see and hear what he would do next. His new album "Thriller" had been released recently but hadn't yet become the huge sensation it was destined to become.
So he came out and sang this great new song, "Billie Jean," while showing off some of the coolest dance moves anybody had ever seen. The Moonwalk was just one of them. It was the combination of the great new song combined with the awesome new dance moves that made it such an electrifying moment. People just went insane. Especially when he did the "moonwalk" move - it only lasted a second but you can hear people in the audience suddenly scream - they had never seen anything like that.
Even if his microphone wasn't live (he probably was lip-synching, which was standard on shows like that), it didn't matter: the combination of the great song and the great dance moves made a big statement, that Pop Music had a new king. In one amazing appearance, Michael Jackson instantly became the greatest pop star in the world.
