The first volume came out in 1954, the last volume in 1955. Due to paper shortages after the war, it had to be broken out into three volumes. Tolkien always intended it to be a single volume broken into 6 books.
The first volume, "The Fellowship of the Ring" with two books, was first published on 29 July 1954 in the UK. The second volume, "The Two Towers" with the second two books, was first published on 11 November 1954 in the UK. Volume three, "The Return of the King" with the last two books and the appendices was first published on 20 October 1955 in the UK.
