The euro was primarily established through the efforts of the European Union, particularly the Maastricht Treaty, which was signed in 1992 and came into effect in 1993. This treaty laid the groundwork for the economic and monetary union of EU member states and set the criteria for adopting the euro. The European Central Bank (ECB) played a crucial role in managing the euro's implementation and monetary policy. Ultimately, the euro was officially launched in 1999 as an electronic currency, with physical banknotes and coins introduced in 2002.

There are two ways of looking at that. What is now known as the European Union started as the European Economic Community in 1957. All six of the founding members use the Euro. They are France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. When the European Union officially came into existence in 1993, there were 15 members. 12 of them started using the euro when it was launched. The three that did not were Sweden, Denmark and the United Kingdom. There are now 28 members of the European Union, of which 18 use the Euro and 10 do not.
The Euro currency was launched by the European Union (EU) as part of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). It was introduced on January 1, 1999, for electronic transactions, and physical Euro banknotes and coins were released on January 1, 2002. The Euro was intended to facilitate trade and economic stability among EU member states. The initiative was driven by the need for a unified currency to strengthen economic ties within the region.
