His father was an AFL/CIO organizer and a 20-year state legislator in Kentucky. Billy Ray got his start by fronting in a bar 5 nights a week on the Ohio-Kentucky scene. He sharpened his skills leading that Sly Dog band (named after his one-eyed old bulldog) at the Ragtime Lounge in Huntington, West Virginia. The 6' tall, hazel-eyed, brown-haired Billy recalls "We played everything from Johnny Cash to Bruce Springsteen. I would sing Sing Me Back Home by Merle Haggard and follow that with Rebel Yell by Billy Idol.". Today he is most famous for "Achy Breaky Heart" in 1992, it sold eight million to date, and ranks as on the 10 biggest selling albums of the '90s and is the biggest selling debut album in history. Billy Ray went on to s record many more hits, and in 1993 he was nominated in 5 categories at the Grammy Awards.
