At the end of the first book. Harry wonders why Severus was trying to protect him from Quirrel and Albus tells him it is because James did something that Severus could never forgive him, he saved him. Which means that Severus is in debt to James and he felt that by protecting his only child he is repaying him and can then go on hating him guilt free.

Poor Severus...LOVE YOU SEVERUS! James was an IDIOT! GO SLYTHERIN!
