Their first recording as the Beatles was in 1961, as Tony Sheridan's backing band for Germany's Polydor Records. Prior to that, they had made some home tapes with a borrowed recorder, and done one session at a home studio in Liverpool, where they covered Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day".

The Beatles released no albums until 1963. They previously recorded single sides, some for Polydor in Germany during 1961, and an album-long audition tape for Decca on New Year's Day 1962. These were released years later as albums, outside the Beatles' control. Recordings of their last Hamburg engagement (New Year's Eve, 1962-63) also appeared later in album form.
