Their first recording as The Beatles was in 1961, as Tony Sheridan's backing band for Germany's Polydor Records. Prior to that, they had made some home tapes with a borrowed recorder, and done one session at a home studio in Liverpool, where they covered Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day".

In 1962 they were very famous in Liverpool; they had to wear disguises to go out during the day. They became nationally famous in the UK shortly after the release of their second single, "Please Please Me", on January 11, 1963. It became a #1 hit in England. Europe soon followed, then America the next year with "I Want To Hold Your Hand". The Beatles hit international fame by 1964, when they "conquered America".

The Beatles began in 1960 in Liverpool, England. At that time, the band consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stu Sutcliffe, and Pete Best.

Sutcliffe left the band in 1961, and Best was replaced in 1962 by drummer Ringo Starr.
