Speak, friend, and enter. It was of course in an elvish writing but that is what it means in English. The complete inscription read: "Ennyn Durin Aran Moria. Pedo mellon a minno.

Im Narvi hain echant. Celebrimbor o Eregion teithant i-thiw hin" The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter. I, Narvi, made them. Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs.

On the door is written (in Sindarin, written with Tengwar script): "Ennyn Durin Aran Moria: pedo mellon a minno.", the smaller line below reads "Im Narvi hain echant. Celebrimbor o Eregion teithant i thiw hin."

Translation: "The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak friend and enter." "I, Narvi, made them. Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs."

(Note: Yes, the use of the name 'Moria' in this context, before the name was coined, is a known slip of Tolkien.)

Inscription: "Ennyn Durin Aran Moria. Pedo Mellon a Minno. Im Narvi hain echant. Celebrimbor o Eregion teithant i thiw hin."

Translation: "The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter. I, Narvi, made them. Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs."

Narvi was the greatest dwarf craftsman and Celebrimbor was the greatest elf craftsman at the time.

Made during the Second Age, the doors marked the division between the elven land of Eregion (Hollin) and the dwarven city of Moria (Khazad-dum). The doors were opened wide until Sauron defeated the elves of Eregion for not surrendering the three elven rings of power. Instead of assisting in 'The War of the Elves and Sauron,' the dwarves shut the doors of Durin, which created the rift between the elves and dwarves. It was here that Gandalf had difficulty with the password until Merry (in the book, Frodo in the movie) asked the question: "What does it mean by speak, friend, and enter?" Then Gandalf realized that the Sindarin word "mellon" (meaning friend) was the answer. I suppose even Gandalf forgot about the time when a dwarf door would have an elf password.

The story can be found at the end of The Silmarillion.

"One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,

One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them."

In the original Black Speech:

"Ash Nazg durbatuluk, Ash Nazg gimatul,

Ash Nazg thrakatuluk, agh burzum ishi krimpatul."
In elvish writing the inscription reads, "One Ring to rule them all. One Ring to find them. One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them." -sam-is-my-hero-
"One Ring to rule them all , One Ring to find them ,

One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them ."
It is written in the toung of Mordor, in the common toung it said,

Three Rings for Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for the mortal men doomed to die.
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the shadows lie.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the of Mordor where the shadows lie.

In The Fellowship of the Ring, on the great stone doors that lead to Moria, there was written in the elven-tongue of the West in the Elder Days, "Ennyn Durin Aran Moria: pedo mellon a minno. Im Narvi hain echant: Celebrimbor o Eregion teithant i thiw hin." Gandalf the Grey then translated it as thus 'The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter.' And underneath small and faint was written, 'I, Narvi, made them. Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs.'

The inscription is written in Elvish script, and the language is The Black Speech.

It reads:

Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul

ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzam-ishi krimpatul.

which means:

One Ring to rule them all, one Ring to find them,

one Ring to bring them all and in the Darkness bind them.

The lines are two of a poem:

Three Rings for Elven-kings under the sky,

Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,

Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,

One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie.

One Ring to rule them all, one Ring to find them,

One Ring to bring them all and in the Darkness bind them,

In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie.

The poem (and the inscription on the Ring) refer to the ability of the One Ring to locate and perceive the minds of those who wear the other rings, if the One is on its master's hand. The Nazgul are an example of the One Ring's ability to overcome the wearers of the other rings, as they were once the wearers of the nine rings "for mortal men doomed to die."

What was the cave named when Aragorn enters in the movie Lord of the rings?

You probably mean the Paths of the Dead while the entrance was called the Dark Door or the Gate of the Dead, but you could also be referring to Moria (Khazad-Dum).

Who opens the west-door in the Lord of the Rings?

Gandalf opens the West-door into Moria with the password 'mellon', meaning 'friend'. He had misinterpreted his translation of the door-inscription as "Speak, friend, and enter" when it meant 'speak' as in 'say', or "Say 'friend' and enter". In Tolkien's book, Merry is the first to question the meaning and this leads Gandalf to the answer. In the 2001 film, Frodo makes the leap from password to riddle.

Mellon, the elvish word for 'friend'. It was part of a subtle riddle, as the inscription on the door said, "The doors of Durin, Lord of Moria, speak friend and enter."

Why is the book Lord of the Rings banned?

Maybe the title- Lord has a religious concept to many. It does portend an alternate historical reality, something maybe too heavy for kids to understand, and unlike the fantasies of Baum and Carroll,. does not use the Nightmare trap door to explain things away.

What is the Easter egg on the sixth stage of this is the only level 3?

Type the word "mellon" when prompted by the gate. This is the elvish word for friend, and the word that Gandalf says to open the door in the Lord of the Rings movie. The entire stage is a reference to this scene.

What do you do when you cant turn the rings on the door needing the ebony claw in the quest of the Jagged Crown in Skyrim?

Leave through the last autosave door, (the last door that shows a loading screen) then re-enter the door, and go back to the claw door. If the rings still don't move, try going all the way out of the dungeon, then returning. If the rings do turn, sometimes the correct combination will not work. If this happens, try turning the rings one at a time, turn the top ring, then the middle, then the lowest. Then start at the top and repeat until the correct order is reached again. Then try the claw.
