Could I suggest that the biography at
the-sons-of-fredis revised, based upon the above e-mail from Pete Sears, plus the interview with guitarist Mick Hutchinson at http://www.terrascope.co.uk/MyBackPages/MickHutchinson.pdf
Suggested revised version:
An obscure but intense British beat band, The Sons of Fred featured lead guitarist Mick Hutchinson, bassist Pete Sears, drummer Tim Boyle, lead vocalist Ray Redway and rhythm guitarist Alan Bohling in their line-up. Their original sound, along with their 1964 debut single on EMI-Columbia, "Sweet Love" b/w "I'll Be There," was very r&b oriented, but the band switched over to Parlophone the following year and took on a slightly more pop orientation, similar to the Hollies right down to the high harmonies and the crunchy Guitars. Then their final single in 1966, "Baby What Do You Want Me To Do" b/w "You Told Me, marked a return to r&b before they split up. All of the Sons of Fred singles are worth hearing. There is a rumor that the band also recorded as Odyssey ("How Long Is Time," on Strike) in 1966, but this is not true, it was a completely different band. Mick Hutchinson and Pete Sears went on to play with The Sam Gopal Dream. Mick also formed "Clark Hutchinson" and later played on Chris Rea's album Tennis in 1980. Pete Sears went on to play on four of the classic Rod Stewart English albums including "Every Picture Tells a Story". He also worked in the USA with Leigh Stephens from Blue Cheer, and Micky Waller in a band called "Silver Metre". He later worked with the "Long John Baldry Blues Band" on their first US tour, John Cipollina in Copperhead, and was a founding member of the original Jefferson Starship with Grace Slick in 1974. He later played with people like Nick Gravenites, John Lee Hooker, Harvey Mandel, and worked with "Hot Tuna" for ten years through the 1990's. He now plays with "Moonalice" and "The David Nelson Band". The "Sons of Fred" recorded at E.M.I. Studios, later called Abbey Road, and appeared on the 1960's TV shows, "Ready Steady Goes Live", and "Thank Your Lucky Stars".
