Since his confession was ruled inadmissable, his defense was that he truely believed Nick was going home. (still debatable) His testified that he ran away from Hoyt and Nick as soon as they got out of the car on the trail. The jury believed him and found him not guilty on the murder charge. But his confession revealed that he was present at the murder and ties Nick's hands behind his back with tape.
