When William Golding came out of the war, he was upset about how people treated each other. His views changed, and he decided that people are born evil. He believed that selfishness and evilness is human essence. The only thing stopping us from acting on our natural instinct of being evil, is society and the rules and consequence that come with it. The book is his interpretation of what would happen without rules.

Golding said that his intention in writing the book was to write a more realistic account of what might happen to a group of marooned boys that had been previously imagined in books such as 'The Coral Island.' He even deliberately used the names Ralph and Jack, which were also used in 'The Coral Island' to make the comparison clear. So, as he was writing an alternative account of boys marooned on an island it obviously had to take place on an island. An island is an ideal setting, especially a tropical island, as it has all the basic necessities such as food and water. More importantly it is isolated and divorced from the outside world and its influences. In effect it is like placing some microbes in a Petri dish, sealing them in and seeing what happens.

Write a brief description of the assembly area in Lord of the Flies chapter five?

Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding and published in 1954. The shape of the assembly area resembled a triangle, but a rather rough triangle. There was a large log from a felled palm tree for Ralph to sit on as he faced the boys. There was one log on the right side and 4 smaller logs on the left.

Why are there no girls in Lord of the Flies?

There are no girls in Lord of the Flies because the boys were from an all boys school. :) It was also due to the fact that William Golding was looking to prove the defects of human nature, so if he put both sexes on the island, it may not have been as easy to determine the causes of the behaviour. Instead of Jack hating Ralph for being chief, people may have argued it was because there was a girl involved. Also, Golding being male would have found it far easier to write about boys.

When does the Lord of the Flies appear?

Just after the Atomic Bomb was dropped on Japan The period in which Lord of the Flies takes places is not mentioned in the book. As an ejectable aircraft 'passenger tube' and a nuclear war against 'The Reds' are both mentioned it would probably be safe to place the time frame as being set during some imagined future nuclear war against communism. ___ Lord of the Flies does not take place in a future imagined war - it took place during the early years of the Cold War in which the USA was against the USSR in the fight for nuclear weapons. ___ The future? What? No it took place in World War II Haha :)

Did William Golding achieve his purpose in writing Lord of the Flies?

Golding ends Lord of the Flies like he does to overall expose us to the perspective an adult would have on the savage behavior the boys exerted. The boys ended up causing destruction, killing others, and losing all manners during this period of time. The naval officer is completely disgusted by the way they acted since being rich and intelligent British boys they were taught better. Overall he ends the book that way on account of irony.
