Esperanza is a mustang just like her son Spirit.
His father, Strider, is never shown in the actual movie. Although he is seen in photos to be pure black (as his mother is yellow and white mixed with black, creating yellow and black).
I believe the breed was an Arabian.

A black stallion is just the color of a non-gelded horse. That could be any breed. If you want a specific breed of horse i can give you a couple. Thoroughbred Horse: 45mph (long Distance) Quarter Horse: 55mph(Short Quarter Mile Sprint) The average horse can run around 30mph some more some less

In the end, it's up to you. However, if it were a male I would name it Strider or Spirit. If it were a female I would name it Esperanza or Rain. I'm sure most people know why I say this. If you dont go on google or yahoo or whatever and type in Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Or you could watch the movie. Hope it helped.

Not really, no.
"The Spirit" graphic novel by Will Eisner , and later made into a movie , was not predicated upon any factual character . Additionally , if you're referring to "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" it is actually based on a true horse named "Donner". He lived in the middle 1800s...there is documented proof he did exist...and was real. The story too...
