There are many excellent products for composing music. Fruity loops studio is the best one by far. There are effects, and rips and all of the software is upgradeable. It is expensive but the high production quality will be worth it.

For something of a little lower quality, any of the Sibelius versions work well. But only use that if you need something more for a class or hobby than a career.

It's hard to say what the "best" software is. Everything will depend on the user and what they prefer. If I had to pick I would say Pro Tools because almost every professional studios uses it. I've used a few programs in my day and really they all do the same thing. I really like Pro Tools but for a novice, it may be a bit too complex. The basic elements will be in each program, just with different bells and whistles. A lot will depend on what exactly you are trying to do and how much you know about the process of recording. Even with cheaper less involved programs you can still make good music if you know what you are doing.

For music creation and editing, I would highly recommend trying our WavePad and MixPad. They are excellent pieces of software and both are very easy to use.

You can download them here:

The best software for beat making is Ableton Live 8. You are wasting your time and money with any other DAW because Ableton's features are mind blowing. The warping feature alone is priceless. Sampler/looper being able to manipulate sounds, detune them and adjust them to the note and scale of your primary instruments and sounds. Using Impulse for a drum machine that allows you to control the velocity of each drum and add saturation. Multi-track recording allows you to be in track mode or session mode which allows you to be in a live environment. Ableton Live 8 has award winning effects and plug ins that are very unique in quality and character. You have the ability to export 32 bit files, Pow-R dithering, and session memory protection. I see all the other DAWs out there and many experts agree that Ableton is the best environment to be in as far as beat making software is concerned. Logic takes way too long to learn (EDIT: I disagree, Logic took me less than two weeks to learn). Pro-tools is way to heavy and slow, Dub Turbo is a novice piece of software and Sonic Producer is sub par. The best version of Ableton to get is the full version. The trial is just that a trial I suggest Ableton 8 as the best software for beat making. Music making experts have agreed that the sound manipulation of Ableton Live is a key feature because you can take one slice of sound and turn it into a whole new sound. This allows a producer to create a whole new world of music that has the most unique qualities. Ableton Live is VST/AU compatible and has a well thought out design with many hot keys that make executing tasks easy. As a beat maker you will be in total control of your music environment and that will help your sound form into what you truly want it to be.

GuitarPro 6. You can add drums, Guitars (acoustic, electric clean, distorted, overdrive, virtually anything), basses, keyboard, synthesyser, anything. You can also completely have it play the whole thing out for you and you can hear how the whole thing will sound. You can customize everything how you want. And you can write everything for yourself on it.

Though this software does help you write music, it is still up to you to put it all together. Recognize your Music Theory at pianomother.com

One of the best software to use is MuseScore. very easy to use and professional.

It even plays the finished product in a midi style.

It plays exactly how you wrote it.

Answer:

For free notation, I really like MuseScore. It's free, you have free access to thousands of scores online as well as publishing yours. It's really good to learn on. The only problem I have with it are minor problems I don't have in other programs, likehow other programs will separate the note stems appropriately, but sometimes in MuseScore, the stems for the whole measure are connected and rhythms can be hard to read. And the sounds aren't the best. Other than that, it is a great program. You can use MIDI instruments with it which can be very useful.

For something not free, I really recommend Sibelius (7 is the latest version). It is a little expensive, but it is worth it. It does anything and everything, it is very professional, and it looks fabulous! You get things done, and the sounds are phenomenal. You can always get a trial of the full version before you get it. I haven't had one problem with it, and I'd be surprised if you had to crack open the user manual/help files. Most of this applies to Sibelius 6 and 7, mostly because I haven't tried the earlier versions.

Audacity is probably the best, most popular free multi track sound recorder/editor. It is available for Windows, Mac or Linux.
