There seems to be no definite answer to this question. I've read that his mother liked Robins, and she called him "her little Robin" since he was born on the first day of spring (not sure if that's true). It's also said he is modeled after Robin Hood. Another one I read was that Dick mentioned his father "swooping in like a Robin" when trying to save his family.
