Was gore-tex made it accidentally?
Bob Gore often describes the invention of Gore-Tex (R), as a "Discovery" rather then an invention. He was attempting to expand a rod of PTFE (Teflon), by heating the entire rod in a small oven, then grasping both ends of the Rod with asbestos gloves and slowly pulling both ends. He was hoping to achieve an expansion (elongation), of about 10%. After failing to stretch this material slowly a number of times, he gave a very healthy "Yank" to his last sample and to his amazement, it stretched, not just 10% but amazingly higher percentage. Hence the discovery/invention of Gore-Tex.

The main ingredient in Gore-Tex is made using an emulsification polymerization process which is fairly complex. All you really need to know is that Gore-Tex is made from the same stuff as Teflon, but it has been expanded, thus creating pores. These pores allow air to pass through and your body to breathe, but they are so small that water droplets cannot pass through them.
