The Beatles each used many different instruments throughout the band's duration. John did lead vocals and backup vocals, played guitar (Rickanbacker 325, Epiphone Casino, and various acoustics), piano, harmonica, and a Fender Bass VI . Paul sang lead and backup vocals, played bass (Hofner, Rickenbacker), guitar (Epiphone Casino, Fender Telecaster), and piano. Ringo played drums (most commonly a Pearl drumset) and other percussion instruments such as tambourine. George played guitar (Fender Rosewood Telecaster, Gretsch Duo Jet, Gretsch Country Gentleman, Rickenbacker 360/12, Epiphone Casino, Gibson SG, Gibson Les Paul, Gibson Super Jumbo acoustic, and Fender Stratocaster), the Indian instrument known as the sitar, and also the Fender Bass VI.

The Beatles used a range of instruments through their careers; Paul McCartney is largely known for using a Hofner bass, although in the studio after 1965 he often used a Fender precision bass. There was a right-handed version for George and John to use if required.

John was, rather surprisingly, quite conservative about his choice of instrument and used a Gretch early in his career, switching to a Epiphone Casino later on. He had the Epiphone bleached white. Ironically, the Epiphone Casino is a "copy" of a Gibson guitar - most Guitarists would probably prefer the Gibson original.

George also played a Gretch, but also used a Rickenbacker - the 12 string Rickenbacker was quite a revolutionary sound in the early 1960s. Like many guitarists, he chose different guitars for different songs; he regularly played Gibson SGs and Fender Stratocasters.

Ringo played a Ludwig drum kit for pretty much his entire Beatles career, although for studio use - starting with Revolver, the skin was removed from the bass drum and a large woollen jumper stuffed into it to allow close miking.

Did The Beatles do completely new music?

There are some areas of music that the Beatles can, rightly, claim to have pioneered; introducing Indian instruments into rock recordings, the blurring of the distinction between pop and classical music, creative use of guitar feedback all come to mind. However, most Beatle recordings are in existing genres (rock and roll, country, ballad etc) but simply done better than other people had done them.
